They say that wines in the Magnum format taste better! But there are lots of other reasons for choosing bigger bottles: they're perfect for a surprise gift, attractive and can sometimes be an excellent investment. Only Magnum from now on?
Contact with oxygen makes a wine evolve and age, so the size of the bottle is very important. A Magnum bottle has double the volume of a standard bottle and thus has less oxygen in contact with a proportionately greater quantity of wine. This means that a wine kept in a Magnum reaches its maturity more slowly, it evolves in a more stable and protected way, resists temperature swings better but above all its taste characteristics are intensified. Real wine lovers prefer Magnum wines because they expect to find more freshness, great finesse and a higher complexity of aromas than they would in a classic bottle. Try it with a Chianti Classico or a Franciacorta and you'll see! But make sure that the bottle is kept well, remembering the rules for looking after your bottles correctly: in a horizontal position, in a quiet and dark room at a steady temperature between 12 and 17 degrees and moderate humidity between 60% and 90%.
We have to choose a gift to take to a dinner, or for a birthday or we want to send to a distant friend a bottle of our favourite wine so that we can enjoy it together. Remember that a big format means a big surprise effect!
Some people just buy Magnums of particular vintages, thinking of the year their child was born or of their wedding and want special and memorable wines like an Amarone from the Valpolicella or a Sfursat from the Valtellina. Others like to collect them with a view to sharing them on an important occasion like an anniversary. But why limit yourself just to special occasions? A picnic, a football match with friends or a Sunday at home with the family are moments of celebration and happiness where the wines can be enjoyed while you have a good chat, a good laugh and have a generally merry time. Why not add a touch of class by sharing a Magnum of Lambrusco or Ripasso?
It goes without saying: the theatrical effect is guaranteed. A Magnum is an experience for all the senses, the pleasures of the palate combined with an aesthetic one of a bottle out of the ordinary to change an aperitif with friends into something special; how about trying a Prosecco? Or a great Sicilian Chardonnay? Or have you ever tried organising an evening with a theme and giving your guests instructions on what to wear? An Only-a-Magnum Party .... It'll certainly turn out to be a "big" evening!
Not all producers use this format or, if they do, it's usually for the best production of important vintages or for wines which will improve with a longer aging. The rarity of these wines make them something precious and often an extremely worthwhile investment for wines which are already successful such as Amarone!
